New blinds can dress up your home and can also help you save energy, increase privacy, and control indoor lighting. When buying new blinds, it is important to consider the type of blinds you want and then to measure the window accurately, so they fit properly.
Before you get out the tape measure, decide whether you want the blinds to be mounted inside the window frame or outside.
Inside mounted blinds hang inside the frame of the window, creating sharp, clean lines around the frame, accentuating its shape and size. When considering an inside mounted blind, think about the location and shape of the window and how or whether it has trim around it that you want to expose or conceal.
Inside mounted blinds come with mounting brackets and headrails of different size. If you are installing your blinds inside the window frame, you need to consider how deep the frame is at the top, measured back from the wall to the top of the window, get blinds with a headrail that fits in this dimension, or the headrail will project out beyond the wall.
To measure for inside mounted blinds:
Outside mounted blinds make the window look bigger and can hide damaged or unattractive trim and molding. Outside mounted blinds create more privacy inside and also allow you more control over light levels.
Outside mounted blinds overlap the wall on each side of the window. Add 3 to 6 inches (7.6 to 15.2 cm) to the width of the window to account for this overlap.
