When designing your curtains or other window coverings for an oversized window, the process of measuring can often time make or break the whole process. Depending on the direction the house is sitting, the need for oversized window coverings could be very great due to the massive amounts of sunlight shining through.
How to Take Window Measurements
Before you begin the task of ordering curtains, it is important to make sure the measurements are recorded to assure the perfect length that will cover the entire window, so that your contractor will have the adequate dimensions.
The first step to accurately find out how large your window is to gather your supplies: a sturdy tape measure, a ladder, a piece of paper to write your measurements down, and a friend (or husband) to assist.
Measuring from the bottom windowsill to the top of the window can be more tricky (due to the height of the large window), but you just need to make sure your tape measure is completely vertical and not slanting one way or another. Stand on the ladder to support the tape measure half way through and have your friend hold it at the base of the window to keep it as straight as possible. Once you have the measurement, you are safe to write it down. The horizontal measurement is much more simple to acquire and does not demand the use of a ladder. Have one person on either side of the window and stretch the tape measure across the width of it.
