Whether your window treatments are shades or curtains, you will notice over time that dust collects on them as well as larger dirt particles and pet hair (if you have pets.)
Dust is one of the worst allergens; it can make people who don’t even suffer from allergies sneeze. Therefore, when cleaning off the dust from your blinds and curtains, it is recommended that you wear a paper mask to prevent breathing it in, especially if there is a lot of dust to clean.
Keeping blinds clean can be a chore, seeing how you cannot toss them in the washing machine and hang them out to dry. To clean your blinds, flip the slats down so that they are facing you.
Using a multi-purpose cleaner, spray a little onto a cloth and gently wipe down each slat, starting at the top and working your way down. Then, flip the slats over to the other side and repeat. To keep your blinds looking clean, repeat this process weekly.
If the weather does not allow for outside cleaning and drying, fill the bathtub with enough water to cover the blinds, add a little cleaner, and place the blinds inside the tub. Then, clean the slats, rinse them off, and lay them on a large towel to dry. Proceed to rehang them on their respective window fixtures.
Keeping curtains clean is a lot easier than keeping blinds clean. You have a few options for keeping curtains clean. The first option to consider is to vacuum your curtains with one of the smaller attachments.
To vacuum your curtains clean, set the suction on low to not rip the curtains off the rod. Start vacuuming at the top and move in a straight motion to the bottom, then move to the next section of the curtain and repeat until the entire curtain has been cleaned.
To clean the backside of the curtains, vacuum in the same manner as you did the front. Vacuum the curtains every other week to keep them dust-free and clean.
You can also wash the curtain on the delicate cycle and let them air dry. If you cannot hang them outside, put them in the dryer on the delicate air cycle. You may also have to iron the curtains after washing and drying them.
